Studio Statement
This artwork is the first of a three work series titled “Ubuntu”. Ubuntu is a quality that includes the essential human virtues; compassion and humanity. Africa so far has been torn between internal unrest, tribal hate within kinsmen while seeking external validation from races that have no care about her. It seeks to reveal the state of Africa through the subject who is in despair; and to bring our awareness to what needs to be done to progress. The female subject is young and is symbolic to the “mother” referencing of Africa as “Mother Africa”.
This art seeks to expound on the first stage of Africa in the post colonial era where Africa is still trying to find her way back to ancestral roots due to the centuries of despair she had suffered. It reveals the stage where Africans are “Yearning”.
